Taking recovery to new heights

April 03, 2023

In 2022 a group of intrepid people who had been impacted by stroke embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, hiking the Larapinta Trail to raise money and awareness of stroke.

Priya was one of those intrepid hikers.

In 2015, Priya suffered a stroke, caused by multiple blood clots in her brain, lungs and right leg. “It was definitely a shock, I was told by my neurosurgeon that I got to the hospital just in time and that if I hadn’t come in, I would have died,”

“I was in hospital for about three weeks, rehab for two weeks and then outpatient rehab for four weeks.”

As part of her recovery, Priya had to learn how to walk again and do everyday tasks like using a knife and fork.

“Being able to walk again was a huge achievement and I have continued to push myself further in so many ways.

“Every year of recovery is a milestone worth celebrating.”

What were some of the highlights from the Larapinta trek in 2022?

Meeting everyone and learning more about different charities and why everyone was doing this trek.

Learning more about people's personal stories.

Describe some of the friendships and bonds that were built on the trek.

I was already friends with a few in our group, but I feel that this experience brought us closer as we learned more about each other's journeys. Similarly, I formed bonds with new friends because of this.

What are some of the immediate and lasting impacts of doing a trek like this?

The trek showed me how strong I am after everything I have gone through, and that if I get out of my comfort zone occasionally, I may surprise myself.

And the long-lasting friendships that we made on the trek are a bonus.

What advice would you give to others who do a trek?

Give it a shot if you can!

Even if, like me, you can't do the full trek, the experience of being there is amazing.

And finally, don't push yourself too hard, and enjoy the amazing views.
