The Bequest Society's name was chosen in honour of Neurosurgeon Mr David Brownbill AM, who in 1983 was one of our two founders.

Mr David Brownbill AM and co-founder Sir John Holland, created a research foundation to improve the treatment of stroke and other diseases of the brain and nervous system.

In 1996, stroke was identified as one of Australia’s health priority areas of need, and the fledgling research organisation formally became the National Stroke Foundation.

With heartfelt thanks to Mr David Brownbill’s tenure, Stroke Foundation has championed breakthrough stroke research and successfully advocated for access to innovative treatments. In addition, we have increased public awareness in stroke prevention and recognition, have supported thousands of survivors of stroke and educated health professionals to deliver best-practice care for more than a quarter of a century.

Mr David Brownbill, is a champion to Stroke Foundation in another way, he has made the incredible decision to leave a gift in his Will to ensure Stroke Foundation can continue to work towards a future where stroke can no longer take what we love.
