Welcoming appointment of new Health Minister

January 19, 2017
Stroke Foundation has welcomed the appointment of the Hon Greg Hunt MP as Federal Minister for Health and Sport.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan congratulated the Minister on his appointment with the following statement:

“Stroke Foundation looks forward to working with the Minister and the Government to improve stroke prevention, treatments and research across Australia.

We welcome the Minister’s acknowledgement at Frankston Hospital yesterday (18 January) of stroke prevention as a critical area of focus and attention.

Stroke is preventable, it is treatable and it can be beaten.

Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. It kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. It directly impacts 470,000 Australians and indirectly affects many thousands more.

Ensuring that stroke receives the policy and funding attention it deserves is a top priority for the Stroke Foundation.

There is opportunity to vastly improve access to stroke treatment and support across Australia so more patients survive and avoid disability. A concerted national approach is required to ensure that quality stroke care is provided to all parts of Australia, including often neglected regional areas.

In addition we, also welcome the appointment of the Hon Ken Wyatt MP as the Minister for Aged Care and Indigenous Health.

We wish the Ministers every success in settling into their new portfolios.”
