Delphi Study Development of a sexuality intervention for stroke survivors and their partners

Expressions of Interest – clinical experts - by Friday 26 May

The aim of this study is to develop a consensus based intervention to address sexuality after stroke. This information will be used by the research team to design and evaluate a comprehensive intervention to address sexuality after stroke. Sexuality includes more than ‘having sex’ and includes sexual self –identity, body image, gender roles intimacy and relationships.  We would like to include the perspectives of rehabilitation professionals who have experience in stroke rehabilitation, disability and / or sexuality.

The research team is comprised of

  • Dr Margaret Mc Grath- Senior Lecturer , Discipline of Occupational Therapy, The University of Sydney
  • Dr Annie Mc Cluskey - Honorary Senior Lecturer, Discipline of Occupational Therapy, The University of Sydney
  • Dr Emma Power - Senior Lecturer, Discipline of Speech Pathology,The University of Sydney
  • Ms Sandra Lever - CNC Rehabilitation Graywaithe Rehabilitation Service NSW Clinical Lecturer Sydney Nursing School

The research project is supported by the Stroke Foundation.

If you chose to participate you will be asked to complete two questionnaires. The questionnaires will focus on identifying key topics to be included in a sexuality intervention designed for stroke survivors and partners of stroke survivors.

A Delphi study is a procedure that allows a group of experts to participate, jointly but anonymously, in defining and analysing a complex problem or issue. In our study, we envisage two rounds, each requiring a minimum of about 30 minutes to complete a questionnaire. Many participants in this type of study find the process of feedback and benchmarking of their opinions particularly valuable. The opinions you provide should be personal, rather than reflecting the viewpoint of your organisation or affiliation. Please also note that no travel will be required, as members of the panel do not have to meet physically at any time during the process.

As noted, the information provided will support a development of an intervention to address sexuality after stroke to be provided to stroke survivors and their partners. We are happy to be contacted by email or telephone to discuss your potential collaboration in more detail. Please contact us at Margaret.mcgrath@sydney.edu.au or by telephone 0466104440.  If you do not feel able to take part, perhaps you could forward this invitation to colleagues who you believe have relevant experience and/knowledge and may be interested in participating.
