2017 Australia Day Honours List

January 27, 2017
A long time champion of stroke patients and stroke care was among those recognised in the 2017 Australia Day Honours List for his dedicated service to the community.

Former New South Wales Stroke Services Manager Mark Longworth was awarded a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to community health through the development of programs to assist people affected by stroke.

Stroke Foundation Acting Chief Executive Officer Máiréad Doyle congratulated Mr Longworth on receiving the prestigious medal.

“To be recognised in the Australia Day Honours is one of the highest individual acknowledgements of service to our community," Ms Doyle said.

"This is a wonderful honour for Mr Longworth, who on a daily basis went above and beyond to assist others.

“Mr Longworth has not only led the advancement of stroke treatment and care in New South Wales, but encouraged national and international collaboration to improve services by founding the nursing and allied health professional conference SmartStrokes.

“Mr Longworth has also been an important member of the Australian Stroke Coalition,” she said.

Mr Longworth is now retired.

Ms Doyle also took the opportunity to congratulate those who received Australia Day recognition in their own communities.

“Those recognised are shining examples of people going above and beyond to lessen the significant burden stroke places on the Australian community,” she said.

“Congratulations to all those recognised and thank you. With your support and that of the broader community together we can prevent, treat and beat stroke.”
